Where To Go

Trying to decide on travel destinations can be an exercise in frustration.  There’s so much world to see and so many potentially amazing places to go that it can be daunting to only choose one country or region.

The ultimate reasons that people take to the road are as many and varied as the people themselves.  The simplest advice is to go to a place you’ve always dreamed about visiting. Maybe you want to learn a new language or look at ancient works of art. Perhaps you just want to lay on white sand beaches in a tropical paradise.  Or maybe you’re just looking for an experience as different from your normal, everyday existence as you can possibly find.  Whatever your initial motivations, you will end up being affected by your travels in ways that will enrich your life for years to come.

Some people choose to purchase an Around the World ticket which allows you to choose a set of destinations and a year to visit them. This can be a great way to see a lot of places in a relatively short period of time.  However, it can be limiting if you happen to find a place (or person) you really like and want to stay for awhile. Sometimes the best plan is no plan.

Guidelines For Planning A Trip

While you can plan your routes and destinations any way you like, here are some general guidelines to consider when planning a trip:

  • While it’s great to have a year or longer to travel, it’s far from a necessity to have an unlimited amount of time to travel in order to have a meaningful experience.
  • In limiting your travel time to fewer places, you will undoubtedly learn a lot more about the places you are visiting.  You will be able to engage the local people more—perhaps make new friends, learn a bit of the language, and most certainly to find out what life is like in a particular country as it compares to your own.  Aim for quality of experiences, not quantity of destinations.
